City of Stones Gjirokastra excursion starting from Saranda port.
Gjirokastra, also known as the “City of Stones”, is one of the most important tourist attractions in Albania. It is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Gjirokastra is also the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the communist leader of Albania from 1944-1985. In this excursion you will have a walk through the old bazaar with different artisan shops, typical old houses and quarters are the main hotspots of this city. The highlight of the excursion is the visit to the fortress of Argjiro. It provides outstanding views not only of the town but also of the surrounding countryside.
Built during the 4th century, there are displays of weaponry, a captured American aircraft, museum displays, and even a former prison. Make sure to look for the legend of Argjiro, a princess who jumped to her death from the heights rather than surrender to Ottoman invaders. Besides the visit throughout the city, there is free time for lunch. After that, you will go back to the port.

Itinerary
After meeting with the guide at the Saranda port, you will be transferred for 1.5 hours towards Gjirokastra for a visit to the “City of Stones”. After the arrival, you will be able to start your sightseeing tour in the old bazaar with artisan shops, traditional old houses and quarters. Next, you will be visiting Argjiro Castle. Later on, there will be free time at your leisure and for lunch in Gjirokastra. After that, you will be transferred back to your ship in Saranda Port.
