Vlora, the independency city is picturesquely located on the Bay of Vlore. Vlora has a long history, not unlike other ancient towns along the coast. It was first founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC. Later, it was an important port of the Roman and the Byzantine Empires. Changing hands several times over the centuries, Vlora finally fell to the Ottomans in 1417. It was in Vlora that five centuries later – in 1912, during the First Balkan War, Albania declared its independence from the Ottomans. However, the Italians invaded it a couple of years later.

History speaks for itself in Vlore while visiting the city. In the center is the Flag Square, where the people gathered to celebrate the raise of the flag. Vlora enjoys a beautiful position because it is the gateway to the Albanian Riviera, which is the gem of Albanian Tourist places. The town with its wide boulevards decorated by huge palm trees has a real southern Mediterranean feel to it. It is located in front of the Karaburuni peninsula and Sazani Island, close to various sandy and rocky beaches and the scenic nearby mountains.
