Itinerary
Tirana is the capital of Albania and its largest city. It is in the center of Albania, enclosed by mountains and hills. Tirana International Airport is served by local and international airlines.
After meeting with the guide you will travel north to Kruja, once the center of Albanian resistance against the Ottomans that was led by Skanderbeg. Driving along a winding mountain road, you will reach the town’s main square, marked by the equestrian statue of Skanderbeg wielding his sword. Continuing uphill and above the town, you will reach the historic fortress and citadel which successfully withstood three Ottoman sieges led by Sultan Murat and later by his son Sultan Mehmed II—the conqueror of Constantinople (now Istanbul). It was only after Skanderbeg’s death that the fortress finally fell and the Albanian resistance was suppressed.
You will visit the castle, the Ethnographic Museum, and the Ottoman-style covered bazaar. You will enjoy going to a workshop in the old bazaar to see how the traditional Albanain hat (Qeleshe) and slippers (papuce) are produced. Then you will have free time for shopping time in Kruja’s old bazaar.
Next you will travel southwest to the coastal city of Durres, where you will have time to enjoy lunch on your own. Located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, it is Albania’s biggest seaport and its second largest city. Founded in the 7th century B.C., it has many ancient archaeological sites, including the amphitheater of Roman Emperor Hadrian. One-third of the original city wall still exists; you can stroll along the same road as Caesar himself! Because of its favorable position in the Adriatic Sea, Durres (named Epidamnum from Greeks and Dyrrachium from Romans) has always been envied. It was an important connection point under the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. It is still important today as one of the most influential contributors to the country’s economy.
You will have time to sightsee in Durres’ city center and its ancient ruins before traveling back to Tirana.
