On this tour, you will discover two of the most beautiful cities in Albania. This guaranteed excursion journey will first bring you back in time during the medieval ages. In Kruja you will discover the old Ottoman bazaar and its Castle. The views from up there are really stunning! Your tour will start with a walk through the old bazaar. People sell carpets or other handmade souvenirs there, just like they did in medieval times. Continuing through the old bazaar, the road goes up to the entrance of the medieval castle. It has been the fort of Skanderbeg, and the Albanians’ main stronghold during their struggle against Ottoman forces. You will have free time at the old bazaar to sightsee and shop.
After meeting the guide and driver at the bazaar’s entrance, you will travel north to Shkodra where you will have time for lunch and sightseeing.
As you walk around downtown Shkodra, you will enjoy the juxtaposition of ancient houses, narrow streets, stone walls, and modern buildings. Pjaca, the main city center, includes a statue of Mother Teresa (considered to be of Albanian heritage).
So, uncover the mystery and history of central Albania in the unique Medieval Albania guaranteed excursion tour in Kruja and Shkodra starting from Durres.
The tour starts in Kavajë, Albania, a centrally located city in the lowlands of Albania. As with many other Albanian towns, its history dates back to the Illyrians in the 1st century B.C.
You will travel north for 1 hour towards the historic town of Kruja, 560 meters (1837 ft.) above sea level on the slopes of Mount Krujë. Its origins date back ancient days; through the centuries, it has served as a capital city and a focal point for several historic battles.
Your tour will start with a walk through the old bazaar where people still sell carpets or other handmade souvenirs just like they did in medieval times. Continuing through the old bazaar, the road goes up to the entrance of the medieval castle, the fort of Skanderbeg, and the Albanians’ main stronghold during their struggle against Ottoman forces. You will be given free time at the old bazaar to sightsee and shop.
After meeting the guide and driver at the bazaar’s entrance, you will travel north to Shkodra where you will have time for lunch and sightseeing. Internationally known as Scutari and Skadar, it is the largest city of Northern Albania and the administrative center for the region. It is located between the freshwater marshlands of Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, to the west, and the foothills of the Albanian Alps to the east. Three rivers form boundaries on the east, west, and south.
Like many other areas in Albania, Shkodra’s history dates back to the 4th century B.C. when the Illyrian leaders, Agron, Teuta and Gent, declared Shkodra (named Skodra by that time) as their capital. It was a major city for the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans and continues to be so for the Albanians today.
As you walk around downtown Shkodra, you will enjoy the juxtaposition of ancient houses, narrow streets, stone walls, and modern buildings. Pjaca, the main city center, includes a statue of Mother Teresa (considered to be of Albanian heritage). Democracy Square was originally adorned with the socialist-realist sculpture “5 Heroes.” In 2009 the statue was removed and replaced by a fountain. The square was renamed Sheshi Demokracia as a sign that democracy has replaced admiration for communist heroes.
After the visit, you will travel to the coastal city of Durres.
