Greece is one of the southernmost European countries, officially known as the Hellenic Republic. It shares borders with Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. The ancient Greek culture is important for the impact it had on modern society with its most important “invention,” democracy. Until the 2nd century B.C., when the area of modern day Greece was invaded by Rome, the Greek culture flourished in its numerous city-states. This culture was adopted and modified by the Romans. It was an important part of the Byzantine Empire. The Greek language and culture once again flourished, before declining from the mid-15th century-1821 under the Ottoman Empire, when it was declared independent. Since then, Greece has enlarged its area and;in 1981 itgained membership in the European Union.It is one of the fastest developing countries in Europe. The number of tours in Greece has been increasing tremendously since it is an amazing country with a very rich history.
